About Coonoor

Renowned for its tea gardens and factories, Coonoor is one of the three hill stations in the Nilgiris. Situated about 17 kilometers from Ooty, this hill station proves to be a great respite during hot summer months. Famous for its pristine climate and picturesque views, Coonoor stands at an altitude of 1850 meters above the sea level. This hill station has to offer some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Nilgiris, along with its valleys, waterfalls, and lush greenery.

Geography and Climate of Coonoor

Coonoor is situated between 11.35o North and 76.82o East on geographical co-ordinates. It has a sub-tropical highland climate because of its high altitude location at 6070 feet.  The mean temperature of Coonoor remains between 13°C to 19°C throughout the year, with December and January being the coldest months. The best time to witness Coonoor in its full glory, is between October and March.

Business and Economy of Coonoor   

Being a famous tourist destination, Coonoor’s economy relies on the revenue generated from the tourist traffic during summers. Otherwise, around the year, Coonoor depends on the plantation, production, and packaging of tea that grows in the hills. The local population of Connor almost entirely earns their living by getting involved in the tea trade.

Apart from this, education remains a vital contributor to the Coonoor economy. This little hill station has numerous boarding schools, which were started by the British as residential schools. However, these schools today, provide extensive education from Kindergarten to Higher Secondary, and are mostly operated and owned by Catholic religious orders.

Fruit and Vegetable Festival

Fruit and Vegetable Show in Coonoor

Coonoor is home to the Fruit and Vegetable Festival, which is held in the month of May every year. Hosted in the famous Sim’s Park, this festival sees about 25,000 visitors coming from across the country. The Fruit and Vegetable Festival is organized by the Department of Horticulture, and has been continuing successfully for 53 years now.

Owing to abundance of tea plantations, Coonoor hosts the Tea and Tourism Festival in January every year. This festival sees tea connoisseurs coming from across the globe, to witness the rich aroma and strong flavor of the tea grown here. 

Transporation in Coonoor

Coonoor is well connected to most major cities by air, train, and road. However, while travelling on the hill, tourists can rent cars or hire auto rickshaws.

The nearest airport to Coonoor is Coimbatore International Airport, which lies at a distance of 79 kilometers. This airport is well connected to domestic and international cities like Sharjah, Singapore, Mumbai, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, New Delhi, and Hyderabad.

The nearest railway station from Coonoor is Mettupalayam, which is located approximately 46 kilometers away. The other rail-head that lies close by is Coimbatore Junction, which is about 75 kilometers away.

Coonoor is well-connected by road with major southern cities like Bangalore, Ooty, Coimbatore, and Mysore. Tourists can reach Coonoor by taking National Highway 67, which also remains to be one of the primary access routes for the whole district. Regular buses also ply to Coonoor from cities and towns like from Bangalore, Ooty, Coimbatore, Mysore, Salem, Tirupati, and Trichy.
